Title: Exmoor Moorland Heritage Trainee

Overall purpose of placement

The Exmoor National Park Authority was set up under the Environment Act 1995 and became an independent body in April 1997. The Exmoor Moorland Heritage Trainee will be based within the Conservation and Land Management (CALM) Section. Experience and training will be gained principally in the interpretation of the natural heritage, but there will also be opportunities to work along side other staff engaged in a variety of national park duties, such as working with tree, woodland, landscape and ecology specialists, as well as those in education and interpretation.

An additional added value to this placement will be the opportunity for the trainee to support some of the work undertaken by the Heritage Lottery Fund-funded Exmoor Moorland Landscape Partnership Scheme. The trainee will also be expected to support the aims of the Authority to encourage more people can enjoy, learn about, look after and celebrate Exmoor National Park and the wider landscape. 

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

  • Assisting in the heritage conservation and enhancement of Exmoor’s moorlands and promoting opportunities for public enjoyment and understanding.
  • Assist with raising awareness of moorland heritage features, including the identification and recording of species and working with local naturalists to develop resource packs and to encourage mentoring.
  • Assist with the delivery of natural and cultural heritage workshops, guided walks and other events.
  • Assist with recruiting and supporting new participants in heritage survey and research work.
  • Assist with creating links with local businesses to help promote the heritage value of Exmoor’s moorlands.
  • Assist in the development of information and educational material, particularly in connection with the South West Water funded Mires of the Moors Project, the Moorland Classroom outreach work and the Reaching Out project.
