Overall purpose of placement

The Sharpham Trust, based on the Sharpham estate in South Devon, was founded in 1984. The estate itself comprises 550 acres of sustainably farmed land following a three-mile stretch of the River Dart.  The Trust runs Sharpham Outdoors, a programme of environmental activities for schools, pupil referral units, community groups and the general public. The programme focuses on raising awareness and connection with the natural world through a broad range of activities. These include: developing forest school programmes and bushcraft activities; managing the community willow bed project; environmental education for schools, youth and community groups; co-ordinating public events on seasonal themes; Canadian canoeing and conservation projects. It aims to bring people closer to nature and providing them with a greater understanding of the importance of natural heritage.  The purpose of this training placement is to learn how to support these activities by undertaking the responsibilities and areas of learning below.

The aims of the Sharpham Trust are to maintain, conserve and enhance the land, buildings resources and biodiversity of its estate for public benefit and to provide opportunities for physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual learning; through activity, reflection, creativity and enquiry.

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

Your application should clearly illustrate your potential to carry out these responsibilities and meet the Trainee Specification.

  • Develop, organise and deliver Forest School and heritage environmental education sessions for all ages using the Estate and the River Dart as a resource/focus.
  • Develop, organise and deliver heritage educational sessions for all ages to support heritage learning.
  • Research, develop and help implement new ways for client groups to engage with and relate to the river environment.
  • Develop a simple biological recording scheme that could be used by client groups using the River Dart as a resource/focus.
  • Support management and development of outdoor learning environments e.g. developing bird watching facilities over marsh/river, site conservation.
  • Develop a system of recording events using photographic and other methods.
  • Produce heritage interpretive media to support delivery of Sharpham Outdoors environmental and heritage education.
  • Undertake Continuing Professional Development as identified in an Individual Learning Plan.
