Overall purpose of placement

The Trust is dedicated to the conservation of the natural and built environment of Torbay and the surrounding area, the provision of recreational facilities and environmental education. The Seashore Centre at Goodrington runs a packed marine educational programme throughout the year involving visits from schools , community groups and families. The Seashore Centre is also the hub for local marine conservation work in the Torbay area.

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

Your application should clearly illustrate your potential to carry out these responsibilities and meet the Trainee Specification.

  • Develop, organise and deliver a local marine heritage education programme that will engage a wide audience of schools, local residents and visitors.
  • Encourage the sustainable use of the local marine environment.
  • Promote understanding and appreciation of the local marine environment through participation.
  • Assist (and later take a lead on) projects which further the community liaison ambitions of the Seashore Centre by developing the community network, organising volunteer conservation tasks and heritage community events and maintaining communications with volunteers.
  • Develop interpretation and access products for the Seashore Centre.
  • Plan and deliver heritage public events and other activities (e.g. illustrated talks and public events with the Education Rangers).
  • Develop and deliver a personal heritage project in liaison with the Education Ranger.
  • Assist in the surveying and recording of local heritage marine life.
  • Assist with current marine heritage projects.
  • Staffing the Seashore Centre, providing information to the public about the local marine natural heritage of Torbay.
  • Maintaining displays and equipment and the overall appearance of the Seashore Centre.
