Title: Marine Life Education and Recording Trainee

Responsible to: Programme Coordinator of MarLIN

Overall purpose of placement

The Marine Biological Association (MBA) is offering a heritage trainee position working with the Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN). MarLIN is an initiative of the MBA (see www.marlin.ac.uk). The programme researches and publishes information on the heritage biology and sensitivity of marine life, provides access to marine life survey data and also runs a large heritage education and recording programme. The trainee will be working within this team (within the MBA) with opportunities to develop areas of particular interest and experience the research work of the MBA.

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

Your application should clearly illustrate your potential to carry out these responsibilities and meet the Trainee Specification.

  • Working with the MarLIN and MBA education team on heritage surveys and events (The Shore Thing (A level), Seashore Safaris, National Science week and other project work (Blue Sound). This is likely to constitute at least 50% of time.
  • Support and develop the Web calendar of events.
  • Marine species identification, validation of recording scheme information for the Sealife Survey and the Shore Thing survey. Working with the National Biodiversity Network and undertaking species research.
  • Image scanning and work on image and biological recording databases.
