Overall purpose of placement
This is a split placement shared between the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the North & East Yorkshire Ecological Data Centre based in York.
This placement presents a unique training opportunity for the right individual to undertake training and develop skills and knowledge in order to pursue a career in bio-diversity conservation / ecology. The placement will (with support and training) be involved in three key areas of work (i) Ecological habitat and species survey (ii) Practical biodiversity conservation and ecological activities at key sites across North Yorkshire and (iii) Management of information on biological data.

The North & East Yorkshire Ecological Data Centre role
- Implement wildlife surveys at selected Local Wildlife Sites (LWS) alongside NEYEDC staff and other specialist volunteer recorders in order to assess their value and eligibility for designation as Local Wildlife Sites.
- Support the co-ordination of Local Wildlife Site surveys in the East Riding of Yorkshire and collate and manage the resulting biological data.
- Prepare and produce leaflets, maps, citations etc. in order to disseminate information about LWS to landowners and other interested parties.
- Implement research into priority habitats and species in order to meet specific Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) information needs.
- Assist in embedding the East Riding of Yorkshire Local Wildlife Sites within the local authority planning system by preparing and presenting SWS data that can be tested against SWS criteria by a panel.
- Use Local Wildlife Site survey data to identify potential for wildlife corridor between LWS within the East Riding of Yorkshire area.
The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust role
- Research, collate and present the results of biological data searches in order to respond to planning applications submitted to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT).
- Working alongside YWT staff, implement habitat management and biological surveys (e.g. coppicing, breeding birds etc.) on a range of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust nature reserves (including woodland, heathland, grassland and coastal habitats).
- Support the supervision and support of YWT volunteers working on conservation projects.
