Overall purpose of placement

This trainee placement presents a unique training opportunity for the right individual to undertake training and develop skills and knowledge in order to further a career in biodiversity conservation / ecology. The trainee (with support & training) will provide assistance to Conservation staff in running the Local Wildlife Sites system, providing planning advice and delivering the Water for Wildlife Project (WFW).

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

Your application should clearly illustrate your potential to carry out these responsibilities and meet the Trainee Specification.

  • Assist the Wildlife Site Officers (WSO) in undertaking ecological surveys of existing and potential Local Wildlife Sites (LWS).
  • Manage the Trust’s water vole and otter monitoring programmes: implement field surveys, act as a central point of contact for volunteer surveyors; manage biological records and produce the newsletter.
  • Assist the WFW Project Manager with the delivery of practical habitat enhancement project work.
  • Assist the WFW Project Manager with the co-ordination of the strategic mink control programme.
  • Assist the WSO in providing advice to local planning authorities on ecological issues with respect to planning applications.
  • Assist the WSO in providing advice to Local Wildlife Site owners and managers.
  • Assist in the preparation of survey reports for Local Wildlife Sites or other sites of proven or potential biodiversity value.
  • Assist in the inputting, analysis and interpretation of ecological data on the Trust’s Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Recorder systems and other associated databases.
  • Experience the heritage based work of the Trust’s reserves, People and Wildlife and Marketing and Membership Teams, by spending 1-2 days with each of them on specific tasks during the placement.
  • Undertake health and safety duties that are commensurate with the placement and as detailed in the Trust’s health and safety policy.
  • Act in accordance with the policies and procedures of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust at all times.
