Overall purpose of placement

This post presents a unique training opportunity for the right individual to undertake training and develop skills and knowledge in order to further a career in biodiversity conservation / ecology. The post holder will (with support and training) deliver a number of outputs relating to (i) manage-ment of information on biodiversity conservation and the Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) and (ii) practical biodiversity conservation and ecological activities at key nature reserves and sites in Sheffield and throughout Yorkshire. This post will be based at Sheffield Wildlife Trust’s Headquarters at 37 Stafford Road, Sheffield.

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

Your application should clearly illustrate your potential to carry out these responsibilities and meet the Trainee Specification.

  • To develop and deliver systems for monitoring and management of LBAP and ecological information from a range of sites around Sheffield (and potentially other parts of Yorkshire) at which biodiversity conservation projects are being carried out, including Sheffield Wildlife Trust’s 10 nature reserves and other key woodland, moorland, pasture and waterways sites of natural heritage importance.
  • To develop and deliver, with SWT staff, trainees and volunteers, wildlife surveys at the sites above to meet specific LBAP information needs.
  • To carry out desk research on priority habitats and species to meet specific LBAP information needs.
  • To research and deliver responses to planning applications based on sound ecological principles.
  • To prepare leaflets, posters or other types of publication in order to disseminate information on LBAP issues.
  • To promote SWT and membership of the Trust at all opportunities.
  • To supervise volunteers working on conservation projects.
  • To ensure all work is undertaken to SWT's policies (e.g. child welfare, environmental and health and safety policies).
  • To undertake any other duties, as requested by your Line Manager, commensurate with the aims of the Sheffield Wildlife Trust.
