Title: Ecological Heritage Trainee

Overall purpose of placement

To contribute to the conservation of the ecological heritage of Gwent by assisting the work of the Wider Environment Department at the Gwent Wildlife Trust (GWT). This role will enable the post holder to gain a variety of environmental heritage conservation skills and valuable work experience.

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

Your application should clearly illustrate your potential to carry out these responsibilities and meet the Trainee Specification.

  • Assist in the ecological survey of Orchards, Churchyards and Grasslands and record the findings on Geographical Information Systems (GIS), write associated reports and liaise with people associated with this work.
  • Assist in the ecological surveying and monitoring of GWT reserves as part of the reserves monitoring scheme.
  • Assist in responding to planning applications affecting wildlife and participate within the Local Development Plan (LDP) process.
  • Support the work of Gwent Ecology Consultancy by assisting in ecological surveys, compilation of written ecological reports, Geographical Information Systems and ecological data analysis. (This aspect of the role is subject to the nature of any commercial contracts being undertaken).
  • General work associated with the Wider Environment Department. This could include attending meetings, organising events, campaigning and working with volunteers and partners.
  • As part of your LEMUR professional development, undergo 'on the job' training (e.g G.I.S, , Phase 1 Habitat Survey, species survey and monitoring, working with volunteers, planning and development process) in order to undertake the duties in this role description.
  • Subject to consultancy workload, there will be opportunity to gain a taster of the work of different aspects of the nature conservation industry by attending a variety of job shadow ‘taster’ experiences with partner organisations, such as local authorities, biological records centres, GWT environmental education and the assisting of local experts with specific species work (e.g bird ringing).
