Example of a Marine Hub Work Placement

- Placement: Marine Environmental Education Trainee

Jayne Evans worked with the Marine Biological association (MBA) as a trainee working with the Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN) of the MBA. MarLIN is an internet initiative of the MBA (see www.marlin.ac.uk). The programme researches and published information on the biology and sensitivity of marine life, provides access to marine life survey data and also runs a large education and recording programme. Jayne worked within a small team (within the MBA) with the opportunity to develop areas of particular interest and experience the research work of the MBA. As part of her work she supported The Shore Thing Project.

Example of an Urban Hub Work Placement
- Host: Sheffield City Council/Working Woodlands Trust
- Placement: Woodland Heritage Trainee
- Trainee: Tom Newman
- Placement duration: April 06 – Dec 06
Tom Newman worked within a team of Rangers managing woodland in Sheffield and worked with craftspeople to utilise local timber in traditional crafts and products. The placement also provided him with a number of other training and skill development opportunities around rangering and traditional woodland crafts. He was based with Sheffield City Council’s Southern Area Ranger Team and worked mostly on projects within Ecclesall woods alongside specialist woodland crafts people through the Working Woodlands Trust.
Example of Rural Hub Work Placement
- Host: Warwickshire County Council
- Placement: Ecological Assistant Trainee
- Trainee: Catherine Haynes
- Placement duration: April 06 – Dec 06
Catherine Haynes trained to be an ecological assistant with Warwickshire County Council’s Ecology Unit. The Ecology Unit advises the County Council, partner planning authorities and others on a wide range or biodiversity issues. It also runs the Warwickshire Biological Records Centre (WBRC) and responds to research, commercial and other enquiries. She worked in the WBRC using Recorder and basic GIS skills. Her surveying skills were also enhanced by working within a small team. She also worked with the Keeper of Natural History in species project work and Museum Interpretation work and the Habitat Biodiversity Audit, a project to survey Phase 1 and habitats within Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull.
Example of Rural Hub Work Placement
- Host: Worcestershire Wildlife Consultancy
- Placement: Ecological Consultancy Assistant Trainee
- Trainee: Helen Fletcher
- Placement duration: April 08 – Dec 09
Helen Fletcher trained to be an assistant consultancy ecologist with Worcestershire Wildlife Consultancy. The consultancy carries out a variety of work which includes a range of ecological surveys and assesments, mitigation schemes, environmental planning, and habitat management and restoration. All the profits of the consultancy are donated to Worcestershire Wildlife Trust and used to support its charitable work throughout the county. Helen worked within a small team of skilled ecological professionals where she was taught key skills in species identification, surveying techniques and habitat management. She was also involved in writing and producing reports, liaising with clients and requesting data searches.
