Overall purpose of placement

The Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Unit is providing a trainee position to develop specific skills in ecological and landscape survey work, use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and heritage interpretation.  The overall purpose of the placement will be to expand the current biodiversity and landscape data through surveying for veteran trees, bumblebee species/habitat and orchards.  Analysis of the data is expected in order to provide a greater understanding of the AONB’s biodiversity resource.  The placement will also assist in the interpretation of the AONB’s special qualities through interpretation to the public. 

The primary purpose of AONB designation is the conservation and enhancement of the area’s natural beauty.  The roles and responsibilities of the WVAONB Unit are diverse; working with partner organisations, local communities and the farming community the successful applicant will operate within a small multi-disciplinary team and discover the mechanisms for landscape scale conservation.

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

Your application should clearly illustrate your potential to carry out these responsibilities and meet the Trainee Specification.

  • With support from the AONB Community Links Officer continue to develop the Wye Valley AONB Veteran Tree Survey, surveying, identifying and mapping the distribution of ancient veteran trees and their associated features/biodiversity
  • With training and support develop and implement a survey of brown banded carder bee and bilberry bumblebee (Bombus humilis & Bombus monticola) as well as other bumblebee species. And research the extent and determination of the floristic composition of Bombus humilis & monticola  habitat
  • Undertake a survey of orchards in the AONB and a basic assessment of their associated biodiversity and habitat.
  • Input data from all the above survey work into the AONB GIS database.  Interrogate/analyse survey data and produce reports on survey and research work
  • Support the AONB Community Links Officer in the delivery of interpretive and educational events/activities and the production of interpretive literature
  • Support the AONB Community Links Officer with volunteer tasks and community/resident training courses (e.g. drystone walling, hedge laying)
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the Wye Valley AONB Unit and the implementation of the Wye Valley AONB Management Plan
