Overall purpose of placement
The Marine Biological Association (MBA) is offering a trainee position working with the Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN) of the MBA. MarLIN is an Internet initiative of the MBA (see www.marlin.ac.uk). The programme researches and publishes information on the biology and sensitivity of marine life, provides access to marine life survey data and also runs a large education and recording programme.
The trainee will be working within a small team (within the MBA) with opportunities to develop areas of particular interest and experience the research work of the MBA. The Trainee will be supporting The Shore Thing (HLF project number HG-05-00429).

- With the Project Officer developing the ‘Shore Thing’ project involving ‘A’ level students undertaking shore surveys. The trainee will be involved in the logistics of the project, promotional material, teaching, taking groups onto the shore, sealing with data and interpretation.
- Provide details for the Web calendar events
- Research and Web publishing of ‘topic pages’ on marine life and conservation.
- Recording schemes - species research and development of schemes. Working with the National Biodiversity Network.
- Help organise and run ‘seashore safaris’ and school events around Plymouth Sound.
- Image scanning and work on image database
- The trainee will gain experience in Web design, research work, public education and publishing scientific work. Web published material is attributed to the trainee.
