Title: Trainee Ranger / Woodland Heritage Skills Trainee

Responsible to: Ranger Service / woodland crafts workers

Overall purpose of placement

The post holder will (with support and training) work within a team of Rangers managing woodlands in Sheffield and work with craftspeople to utilise local timber in traditional crafts and products. A number of other training and skill development opportunities around rangering and traditional woodland crafts will be available as part of the post. This post will be based with Sheffield City Council’s Southern Area Ranger Team (based at Greenhill Park) and work mostly on projects within Ecclesall Woods alongside specialist woodland craftspeople through the Working Woodlands Trust.

Main responsibilities & areas of learning:

Your application should clearly illustrate your potential to carry out these responsibilities and meet the Trainee Specification.

  • To deliver (with support and training) all aspects of woodland management working alongside the Ranger Service and Working Woodlands Trust craftspeople (including highly skilled tasks such as fencing, footpath work, signposting, timberframing, coppice crafts and tree managment etc.).
  • To assist with the day to day management of the Ecclesall Woods Sawmill site and the craft gallery/retail outlet.
  • To assist with events and educational programmes and activities, and provide information to the public.
  • To assist in the regular monitoring and maintenance of Ecclesall Woods and the Sawmill site and facilities, through patrols and providing an on site presence.
  • With the support of the Working Woodlands trust and its members (self employed craftsworkers), to assist in relevant craft activities and construction projects.
  • To undertake risk and health and safety assessments for all practical works.
  • To undertake and complete a programme of level 3 training (mostly work based learning and portfolio building) with support from a mentor.
  • Ensure all work is undertaken to Sheffield City Council's health and safety policies.
  • Undertake any other duties, as requested by your Line Manager, commensurate with the aims of the Sheffield Wildlife Trust and the grade of the post.
